This course delves into the works, lives, faith, and friendship of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Students will read selections from their novels, fantasy literature, poetry, and Christian apologetics while developing their own skills in writing and critical thinking.
The academic interests of both writers—Tolkien as a philologist and Lewis as a medievalist—will be explored, deepening students’ understanding of language and literature. Throughout the course, students will examine how Tolkien and Lewis’s Christian faith shaped their views on stories and art, both of which they saw in light of the great and true story of the Incarnation and Resurrection of Christ.
